イラクの大量破壊兵器問題の平和的解決と武力行使に反対する声明文
今、世界的な緊急課題であるイラクにおける大量破壊兵器問題は、アメリカ合衆国や英国およびそれを支持する国々による武力行使によって問題の解決がなされようとしています。そして日本政府もまたそのことを支持しています。ふたたび戦争が繰り返されようとするこの事態にあたり、わたしたち真宗教団連合は、問題の平和的解決を求め、武力行使による問題の解決に反対いたします。
人類の歴史を振り返ると、幾多の戦争が今日まで繰り返され、世界中の多くの人々が犠牲となりました。このような過去の事実に学ぶとき、戦争は自国の平和と繁栄を守るという大義名分のもとに行われ、多くの人々のいのちや人権を踏みにじるものでありました。また一方で、戦争は一人の人間を加害者にもし、被害者にもする悲惨な性格を持つものでもありました。
釈尊は「兵戈無用」と兵士も武器も用いることのない世界の実現を説かれています。また、わたしたちが宗祖と仰ぐ親鸞聖人は「世の中安穏なれ、仏法ひろまれ」とすべてのいのちが尊ばれ、ともに争いのない世の中を創っていくことを教えてくださいました。これらの教えを仰ぐとき、縁によって争い、縁によって人をも殺してしまう人間であるからこそ、互いのいのちを尊び、戦争という縁をなくすことの大切さを痛感せずにはおれません。よって今回の武力行使は、お互いがいのちの尊厳に目覚め、いのちを大切にするという仏教の教えに違背するものであり、とうてい容認できません。
世界各地から問題の平和的解決を求め、武力行使に対する反対の声が数多くあげられています。その声は戦争のない平和な世界を希求する人々の願いであります。わたしたちは、国際社会を構成する全ての国に対し、戦争のない平和な世界を築くため、問題の平和的解決に向けて不断の努力を求めるとともに、武力行使による問題の解決に強く反対いたします。

STATEMENT CALLING FOR PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT AND PROTESTING THE USE OF MILITARY FORCE CONCERNING THE DISARMAMENT OF THE NATION OF IRAQ
The United State, Britain, and other supporting nations are moving toward settling by the use of military force the current urgent global issue, the disarmament of the nation of Iraq. Further, the government of Japan is also in support of this measure. As we are standing on the verge of yet another war, we, the Federation of Shinshu Buddhism, strongly request that this problem be resolved peacefully and oppose the use of any military force.
In view of the history of humanity, wars have erupted time and time again up to the present, claiming countless victims from throughout the world. In learning from these historical facts, wars have been fought and the lives and human rights of many people have been trampled on under the cause of protecting the peace and prosperity of one's own country. Further, war has the tragic aspects of where one party is an assailant and the other party is a victim.
Sakyamuni Buddha expounded a world that is free of soldiers and the use of armaments. In addition, our founder, Shinran Shonin, taught us "May there be peace in the world and the Buddha's teaching spread," which tells us to revere all life and together build towards a world that is free of conflict. In view of this teaching, because we are human beings who, if conditions permit, will kill other persons, we cannot help but revere each other's life and keenly feel the importance of eliminating the conditions for war.
Thus, we absolutely disapprove of the use of military force to settle this issue for it violates the Buddhist principles of awakening to and valuing the dignity of each other's life.
Numerous statements have been submitted from throughout the world calling for peaceful settlement of this problem and protesting the use of military force. These are the voices of those who wish for a peaceful world that is free of war. We, the undersigned, to all nations that compose the international society, urge you to use every effort to restore this situation peacefully so that a peaceful world without war be realized, and strongly oppose the use of any military force.
